We all know the importance of maintaining healthy indoor air quality, in order to do this the homes HVAC system needs to work properly. The reason for this is that, if not well maintained, the air it produces can become hazardous to the home’s occupants. It is recommended that you have the HVAC system serviced once a year but, what about the filters? How often should they be changed?
A lot depends on the level of use that the HVAC system gets. Filters should be changed at least every 3 months but there are circumstances which mean they should be changed as much as once a month. For example, if you have a large family or pets, there will be more dust, dirt and pet dander and so it’s a good idea to change the filters monthly. Also, if any family members have allergies or smoke indoors, it is advised to change them monthly as well. You may also want to consider changing the filters more regularly if there is construction going on around your home, if you live in an area with a lot of agriculture or if there have been wildfires in the area as outside air particles easily find their way inside the home and affect the air quality.
Change a filter at once if it becomes damaged in any way. You should also change it immediately if you notice it is damp or wet for any reason. Mold could quickly develop leading to a very unsafe quality of indoor air.
Yes, keeping your HVAC system in good working order is essential to a healthy indoor environment and changing the filters regularly is part of its maintenance.
