No one enjoys the thought of cockroaches invading their homes but, unfortunately, it is a problem for many. Cockroaches are such an issue because, among other things, they are extremely hardy and have the ability to multiply in shocking numbers. So, what attracts them and how can you prevent them from establishing themselves in your home?
Because cockroaches thrive in dirty, moist environments, one of the keys to preventing them is cleaning. Although cockroaches can live in many areas of the home, the kitchen in one place that can provide their ideal environment, so this room is a good place to start. The kitchen should be given a regular, thorough cleaning which should include scrubbing behind and underneath all appliances, even large ones. Keep food in containers that can be tightly sealed and if you have pets be careful not to leave their food out for too long. Choose a trash can that is easy to clean and that has a tight lid on it. Clean and dry the kitchen sink after using it. Cockroaches also tend to stay away from the light so you may want to keep a few lights on at night.
The bathroom is another room that provides a nice environment for cockroaches as they are attracted to moisture. While it might not be as easy to do, try to keep the bathroom and dry and clean as possible. Fix immediately any leaking pipes or dripping taps. Look for areas where cockroaches might enter and seal up those places.
If your home already has a cockroach infestation then it is best to call a pest control expert who can treat the issue, after that it may be easier to control the problem. You can do this by placing boric acid in areas where you have seen the most cockroach activity.
