We know that small children are always falling over. Most of the time they are unhurt. It may be surprising to learn though, that more than 2.5 million children end up visiting the emergency room each year from injuries resulting from a fall. Its good to consider then, steps we can take to help our children avoid potentially dangerous falls. We are going to consider safety gates.
Safety gates are generally designed to block a door way or staircase. If you are looking to purchase a safety gate, you might want to consider the different designs and options that are available to you.
There are a couple of different types of safety gate. One type is a pressure mounted gate. As the name suggests, they are attached by being pressure mounted against a doorway or wall. This kind of gate is ideal in a doorway, for example to the kitchen, which will prevent your little one from accessing potentially hazardous areas.
The other type of safety gate is a hardware mounted kind. This gate is fixed in place with screws, and although it sounds a bit permanent, they can easily be removed. A gate like this is ideal for blocking a staircase. It is much more secure than a pressure mounted kind as it is not easily pushed over.
Because everyone’s needs are different depending on what kind of home they live in, good research before you buy is a must. Whichever you choose though, make sure is meets the ASTM standards.
