Are you hearing noises in your house that you can’t identify? Maybe sounds that seem like they are coming from inside the wall? Some of the sources of the out-of-the-ordinary sounds could be the appliances or pipes in the house. Sometimes these noises are just ignored and considered part of the “personality” of the house. Other times, these noises could be a source of irritation, or even disturbing our sleep.
What are some sounds that could be occurring because of pipes and appliances and what can you do about them? There could be a “hammering” noise in the pipes when water is turned on and off. In this case, you can install air chambers in the pipes and allow the water to flow more freely. You could also use oversized water pipes to allow the water to flow easily. Other pipe-related noises can be lessened by replacing plastic pipes with cast iron pipes.
What about the sound coming from your appliances? There could be appliances that vibrate or possibly make too much noise because they are a bit out dated. If the vibration is an issue, you can install insulation around the areas that are rattling, or use caulking around fixtures or where the pipes go into the machine. Also, consider buying a new dishwasher, if yours still works good, but is a too disruptive. Whirlpool and Jenn-air have lines of dishwashers that are specially made to keep things quiet.
Hopefully, this has helped you to identify and lessen some of those “strange” sounds around the house.
